You said you keep journal separate from the website? Why not share ideas and experiences with other people?
I use my journal as a unedited stream of consciousness to express my immediate thoughts and try to make some sense of life's muddle as I go along. As a private piece of writing there in no censorship, no desire to avoid offending others and no need to edit myself to make myself look a certain way. I don't need to explain myself and often I don't make that much sense. If I were to switch the private writing to a public forum there is a danger that I would start writing for how I want to be read which would mean I might become less honest and my writing more contrived. If this was the case I would not get the benefit from expressing my own genuine inner thoughts and learning from the expression of my inner self. Keeping a journal is a little bit like self psychotherapy and in the same way that lying to your psychiatrist wouldn't get you very far, stylising your personal journal would be equally pointless. The whole purpose is to get to the truth of what you think and who you are and I don't think that is possible if you have any element of writing for an audience rather than yourself.
I also believe that there is a core to every one of us that we need to keep to ourselves, a little part that doesn't need to be understood by other people. It is important to me that part of myself stays private, a little locked away part of the soul for me and me only. And I would urge others to do the same. Give away however much you feel right for you but always keep something of yourself back. Don't let anybody know you completely.
