Question - I am new to all of this. I am trying to figure out which type of witch I am. I love to do things on my own so I obviously would be a Solitary witch but also, I want to go with the path of an Eclectic witch. But what do I call myself when it comes down to it all? Sorry if this question is dumb but I wanted to ask anyway. Thank you so much.
Answer - It is always interesting to see how people new to a craft path get very focused on labels. This is understandable as the rest of the world and particularly the Abrahamic faiths are very big on labels and it is natural to assume that such a structure would apply to a new path.
However witchcraft defies most labels. It is my view that being a witch is about self- actualisation, looking inward to find who you are rather than looking outward to find which hierarchy or structure you can shoehorn yourself into with the least amount of squeezing.
Eclectic witchcraft is a very broad umbrella and pretty much includes all witches who do adhere to a specific tradition. As a general term this could be applied to many witches in the modern world. Individuals who blend elements from traditions or who forge their own path independent of any tradition or heritage are likely to be referred to as Eclectic witches. I see no reason why you cannot refer to yourself in this way if this description fits you.
However, generally I’d steer clear of anyone who wants to apply a definition to you. As your path evolves you may find a label does naturally start to fit, but let the label find you rather than the other way round. Experiment and work with your nature and your abilities and become your own witch.
It is not what you call yourself but what you achieve as a witch that is the important thing.
