What is the difference between a spell and a charm?

Spells are general magic workings, usually employing the direction of energy and will. A charm is a specific piece of magic involving endowing a physical object with desired properties (usually protective). A talisman would be a charm whereas an incantation would be a spell.
However the word spell also has a more general meaning as an umbrella term for all magical workings.
