ANSWER - The key to feeling confident working with any kind of power is to start learning how to control it. Mind techniques can work very well here, tools such as learning to find a place of peace in your own mind, learning how to keep your mind tidy and uncluttered with the use of memory techniques and learning how to direct your own thoughts and energies with the help of meditation. Start by reading some books on the subject (Derren Brown's Tricks of the Mind is an excellent read if you can get your hands on a copy). Then start to put together a basic set of routine practises that you can expand as you become more confident and more advanced. Keep a journal of your progress and document what works for you, what helps you and what doesn't.
The thing to remember is that a great many people, pretty much everybody in fact has power within themselves. The people who actualise that power and learn how to make it work for them are the people who put the effort into training it and developing the techniques that allow them to guide and control that power. Put the basics in place, learn how to work with it, learn how to be quiet and still in your mind and focus on the essence of your power and what you would like to learn to do with it.
You may well find that the journey to understanding the dormant powers inside you is also the journey to finding yourself and to finding happiness and peace within your life. Its both a goal in itself and a positive starting point for going forwards. Push yourself and see how far you can go.
