The best site to have a look at is probably UK Pagan http://thevalley.ukpagan.com/index.php? - joining this will help you to make contact with people who live all over the UK. There is also (on the Wiccantogether website) a specific group for people who live in the Tyne and Wear area http://www.wiccantogether.com/group/wiccans-of-tyne-and-wear?xg_source=activity - this has got to be worth a look. Then there is the North East Pagan Fellowship http://nepaganfellowship.webs.com/ which will cover your locality as well.
There is a facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Newcastle-Pagans/424437270968150?fref=ts but it only appears to have a couple of members. As there are approx 650 pagans living in the Newcastle area alone, perhaps it might be worth making contact with the page admin and see if you can grow the community a bit?
I'd also suggest you check out a few of the new age shops in your area - there are often details of local moots and meetings on the noticeboards and if not, there is nothing to stop you asking for your own contact details to be pinned up so you can start meeting people in the area. The shop owners are usually pretty good at pointing you to local groups as well and in my experience usually very friendly people and a good place to begin. (I'm a northern lass myself and most people in that part of the country are usually pretty lovely and happy to help).
I've had a look on the internet for you and there is a shop in South Shields http://south-shields.opendi.co.uk/1449519.html. I would be surprised if you don't find a few decent shops in Newcastle or Gateshead as well.
Good luck finding people to share your path with x
