Question - I'm fairly new to witchcraft. However, I found a great supportive community on tumblr.com full of helpful, experienced witches, as well as newbies like me. However, there’s not much that I found on greeting new energies (what I call spirits/deites/etc) into one’s life. I've recently done a tarot reading for myself that suggested I look into bringing Hades into my life, and I was wondering if you knew of any simple rituals to greet him and whatnot? I had heard that you usually don't need to do much when introducing yourself to a new energy, but some, like Hades, really liked the formality of a ritual so I wanted to do that to show I'm committed
ANSWER – I think that the best ritual you can do when greeting a new deity is one as personalised as possible to the deity you are welcoming. There is no set structure and I honestly believe even if there were the Gods would value it less than a ritual you have devised yourself based on your own research and with your own ideas and thoughts.
My suggestion is you do some reading around Hades and find out more about him as a deity. Hades was the Greek God of the Underworld so there is a real Earth connection there. This might suggest an outdoor ritual – or perhaps setting up an altar with a focus on the element of earth?
I always think the best way to build a relationship with any God/Goddess is through sacrifice, this shows them you are serious in your intentions. I’m not talking olde worldy concepts of sacrifice but the much more meaningful method of giving up your time to do something constructive and positive, putting something of value into the world. In the cases of Hades think about what it is he represents. Could a ritual take the form of volunteering to clear out a local hospital garden perhaps? He’s got a close association with dogs, how about offering time/money/support to the RSPCA? These kind of ideas do not have to replace a simple formal introduction ceremony but they add some gravitas to your intentions and will get you noticed as somebody who is genuine about developing a relationship with the Gods.
In terms of making the initial introduction, I see nothing at all wrong with making a respectful personal shrine/altar, perhaps with a picture of your chosen deity on it (doesn’t have to be anything fancy or too obvious, even a nice plant on a small table would work. If you deem it sacred, it will be sacred) - lighting a candle and stating politely your desire to make a connection. The rest as they say is in the hands of the Gods. Listen and wait to see if your voice has been heard – you will know soon enough if your interest is reciprocated.
QUESTION - I've always been interested in witchcraft since a very early age. Never really practiced but do have weird dreams a lot and see things I tried to ignore. Alone with whisper from trees and wind......but yesterday on the blood moon something made me want to do a spell a simple one so I did but something happen tonight it was crazy I was just relaxing resting my eyes and I felt a crazy powerful energy........can't lie felt exciting........but also scary and confused what should I do.....need advice
ANSWER – I think what you have done so far is absolutely spot on. There is no substitute for letting the energy flow through you and going with the moment.
In terms of what you should do – absolutely nothing. It is entirely a matter of choice as to whether or not this is something you wish to pursue. You’ve opened a door, peeped through and experienced a taste of what it is to control energy. You can close that door and walk away or you can choose to experiment a bit and see is spell crafting is something you have an aptitude or an enjoyment for.
If you do choose to work a bit further with this then my advice to you is to get yourself in a good mental place to be responsive to working with magic. Books and websites often talk quite glibly about meditation but the truth is that it really is the best starting point for any practitioner on a magical path (actually that might just be my opinion, I’ve met enough witches to know that any kind of stereotyping is totally redundant, lol). By meditation I simply mean spending some time inside the peace of your own head. I’d suggest you put some time aside every three days or so to sit for twenty minutes, close your eyes and just allow your thoughts and feelings to flow through your mind. Don’t focus on anything specific but don’t try to “blank” your mind either, just let it wander where it wants.
When you feel comfortable with the focus on your inner self, start to incorporate some new elements to your meditation. Have a go at grounding – visualise your negative energies draining from you and being absorbed into the earth below. Then progress to raising energy, visualise a channel between yourself and the earth and draw the healthy vital energies from the earth into your body. Exercises like this will strengthen you and put you in a good place for any magical work you want to do.
From there on it’s up to you whether you want to go further and start casting magic. The meditative exercises will have helped you learn how to control energy and magic is simply the next step of taking that energy and directing it toward a specific purpose.
QUESTION - Hello, I don't really know much about all of this but I hope you can help me. A strange smell has started to follow me the past few weeks. I have checked to see if there is something causing it but it happens in different places. No one else has said they can smell it. It's not pleasant but it's not terrible - it can wake me up at night too. The smell usually stays for about 15 seconds and then disappears for several hours, to days. It's slightly sweet, vegetal but also sour.
Does this sound like something to you? And do you have any tips on what I can do?
Thank you so much for your time.
ANSWER - I’ve got a couple of ideas. From a practical viewpoint experiencing inexplicable smells can sometimes be linked to your health. Doesn’t necessarily mean it is anything serious but I do think it is definitely having a word with your doctor and then if he/she can offer no suggestions try your dentist as a lot of random smells that only one person can smell are actually generated from the throat and the back of the mouth and can be related to dental problems.
I found this article for you on smells connected with the paranormal. I’d agree with the gist of what they are saying but I’d also add that smells can be linked to specific spirits and particular places. Many people speak of experiencing a smell they closely associated with a deceased loved one (mint in particular seems to be common) and they take the presence of the smell to indicate the presence of the spirit. It is worth you thinking about whether this smell is familiar to you in any way or might be linked to anybody who has passed over. (A tentative suggestion but could a vegetable type smell indicate a grandfather with an allotment, that sort of thing. Think about the links…).
If you hadn’t said the smell occurs in different places I would have also suggested the possibility that the smell may be linked to the house itself as a “house memory” but as only you are aware of the smell and the smell doesn’t seem confined to a single location we can probably rule that theory out.
Nothing to worry about if it is linked to a spirit, please don’t see it as a negative thing. Should it cause you concern I would just suggest next time you encounter the smell you state firmly and politely that you do not wish any further contact. Chances are if it is a spirit it will leave you alone.
Definitely have a chat with your doctor though, always best to rule out all the health angles before exploring other possibilities.
QUESTION - Neighbour from hell captured my 6 month kitten, sent him to a kill shelter. Was euthanised. I want revenge, what to do?
ANSWER - I often look at some of the answers I publish and think how reasonable and non confrontational the advice I give out is. This question however will be a major exception. I thoroughly detest people who harm innocent animals and I think this one calls for something a good deal nastier than the usual witchy diplomacy WPF likes to employ.
Basically it is up to you how vengeful you want to be. If someone killed one of my pets I have to be honest I would want to cause a lot of suffering. I don’t hex often but somebody murdering one of my cats would very definitely prompt it.
Hex work can be as elaborate as your imagination permits. The secret of successful negative magic is to actualise the malice in your intent. This is where a lot of hexes fall a bit flat, they just don’t have enough nastiness behind them. Hexing only really works when a witch has a very genuine desire for her working to manifest a decidedly unpleasant outcome.
So looking at some of the things you can do – I’ll suggest a few basic hexing ideas and you can go down the route that you feel most appeals to you.
As with any successful spell, having a clear direction for the channelled energy is a must. This can be achieved with the use of a poppet, a taglock, a drawing/photo of a person or even their name on a piece of paper. It is the link between your intention and the representation that is key to the working.
Assuming it will be easy to get a photo of the neighbour (Facebook so useful here…) you can utilise it in several different ways. The first would be burning. Now I don’t mean burning in the sense that your target will be burned in real life – that kind of literal interpretation of hex work is best left to television. Burning can be used to “rack up the heat” on someone and intensify feelings of panic and stress. A very simple hex would be to burn a photo in a fire proof vessel, add some chilli oil, mustard and peppercorns from your kitchen cabinet and project the intensity of the heat toward your neighbour.
A working with a taglock would work in much the same way – as a directed target for your spell. A quick rifle through your neighbour’s bins should yield anything you need for this – hair, toenail clippings, sanitary products, half eaten apple cores – see what you can find. Again you are projecting your malice toward the person associated with the taglock. I’ve seen successful hexes where taglocks have been sealed and buried (to weaken), exploded (to blow out of the way), submerged in water (to drown out the person’s voice), bound with cord (to prevent action) eaten (to absorb their power and put them under your control), flushed down the toilet (to instigate feelings of worthlessness) and urinated on (to mark them as owned).
I remember reading from one particularly proficient hexing witch who fills footprints with saltpetre and explodes them when hexing people. Genius… but with inevitable health and safety implications lol, adapt ideas like that at your own discretion.
The key with any of these suggestions is to establish a clear link in your mind between the action, the target and the intended outcome and understand why you have chosen to do the specific working. Again this is where a lot of spells fall down, people read spells in books but have no idea of the symbolism or significance of elements of the spell. That’s why I also suggest writing your own spells, it follows that you will understand them better and this will help you keep the focus.
My own preference for hexing usually involves poppet work. I tend to grow a lot of rue so I like to stick a poppet in a bag of rue and give it a good shake up. Rue has a very itchy effect and usually makes my target feel uncomfortable – more often than not with some actual physical itchy symptoms too which can be most enjoyable to watch when truly deserved by the object of the spell.
Now most of these ideas are, strictly speaking, more practical spells than hexes. The true principle of the hex is really just to cause harm. This can be as straightforward as whispering your intention into a candle and visualising pain and suffering on the target. Dipping a poppet in salt water can also be put to good use here to induce tears and unhappiness.
If you are feeling really vicious you can extend the hex to the members of the household – a taglock from the property (a bit of crumbled brick perhaps) would be a good way to direct your negative energies toward all the inhabitants. Equally you can intensify the suffering with the use of mirror shielding which will increase the suffering by rebounding any hate or anger projected toward you back onto the sender.
