Question Hello! I love your blog! My question is this: I am new at feeling and sensing energies. I was holding a few different types of crystals recently and I felt like one hurt the bones in my hand. Another felt like it was burning me. I don't know what types of crystals or stones they are, I've had them for such a long time. My question is, have you ever experienced a crystal or stone hurting you? Also, what should I do with them? Thank you!
Answer. If you experience any negative reaction to a crystal that likely means that crystal isn’t for you, either in this particular situation or it just isn’t a crystal that will generally work in harmony with your own energies. Some crystals will work better for you than others. I have no empathy with hematite for example but I’m never without a piece of selenite down my bra.
The side effects you experienced are largely psychological. And by this I mean your antipathy to that particular crystal has manifested itself in a physical way that the human body can recognise – for example pain or heat. You aren’t actually being hurt or burned, its just your mind telling you that crystal isn’t for you. And being in tune with that little inner voice is what intuitive work is all about.
In terms of what you should do with them, if you mean the ones you are having bad reactions to, try cleansing them. You could bury them in the garden for a few days to let any negative energies dissipate or you could wash them in salt (or blessed) water. Some people prefer to bathe them overnight in the light of the full moon. If you still react badly to the, after that, try buying a crystal you have a good feeling for. Any new age shop worth their salt will let you handle a few crystals to see which ones you build a rapport with.
Once you’ve found your crystal you can use it in many different ways. You can hold it during meditation, sleep with it under your pillow or simply keep it on your person. Cleanse it regularly and a good tip is to charge it on a bed of quartz. Some people prefer to charge inside a pyramid but the tip for the quartz was given to me by a lovely witch and I’ve always found it works very well. Crystals can be incorporated into ritual, possibly as a symbol for earth. They can be used with the traditional correspondences or used for the characteristics that are personal to you. To give you an example, I used goldstone in workings for new beginnings. It isn’t a commonly accepted association but its one that resonates with me. Like I said, its all about intuition and feeling your way toward what feels right. Chances are if it feels right, it is right and it will work alright.
QUESTION - Do you believe in God and do you have to believe in God to be a witch? I’m confused because I don’t think I believe in God but I do want to be a witch?
ANSWER - Witchcraft is not a religion, it is a craft. Some religious people (defining religious as believing in a God/Gods) do practise witchcraft but not everybody who practises witchcraft is religious. In fact, among non Wiccan witches it is more common not to be religious. Wicca is normally seen as the religion behind witchcraft. But again, not all witches are Wiccan. And not even all religious witches are Wiccan (I even know the odd Christian witch which may seem a bit of a logical absurdity but I am assured it is a path that works very well for them.) So no, if witchcraft is something that appeals to you but you don’t have a personal belief in God then this will not hold you back from developing as a witch. I do however stress that there are many broader ways to be spiritual and a formal approach to religion is just one of them. I do think a witch relies heavily on having spirituality to at least some degree, however that manifests itself, be it a focus on meditation, an affinity with spirits or even a simple love of nature. I’m a big believer in the saying that nature abhors a vacumn and while it is perfectly ok to be an atheist, atheism does leave a void that needs to be filled with something. Even if you just fill it with questions. I don’t think being spiritual is about having the answers, it is more about being aware and self aware enough to ask the questions that go beyond the immediate sphere of your own life.
Do I personally believe in God? Yes, absolutely and wholeheartedly. I have my own personal beliefs regarding the dual nature of the God and Goddess. However
I don’t go around trying to convert people, I have my beliefs and I respect the fact that other people have theirs.

QUESTION - I went to get a reading with a psychic and she asked me to get a white spool of thread and put it in a handkerchief and then close the handkerchief, put it under my bed and then bring it back to her this Friday because she claimed that I had witchcraft done on me. Is the thing that she told me to do real? If so, what would this do?
ANSWER - Well its nothing I've ever come across before. And the reason I've been a bit slow answering this is because I've asked a few other witches as well and none of them have come across it either. (So that is six witches in total who don't have a clue as to why you need to put cotton under your bed!) I can only assume if this medium is genuine is that it is something to do with drawing whatever spell she believes has been cast on you out of you. But such a practise doesn't have its roots in any tradition that I have ever heard of. To be honest I don't think this woman has much of a clue what she is talking about. And what does she mean by saying you've had "witchcraft done on you..."? Does she mean a witch has cast a spell on you? If so there are far more effective protections than sticking a sewing kit under your bed. I'd give this medium a wide berth if I were you. Some mediums are excellent and very genuine, some sadly rely on trickery to get your interest and she sounds like the latter to me.

QUESTION - I suffer very badly from depression but my doctor won't take it seriously and refuses to prescribe me any pills. He says depression is just a state of mind and if I get out in the sunshine more and stop moping round the house I will be fine. Are there any natural or magical cures for depression, I just feel so miserable all the time.
Your doctor ought to be struck off. I can't believe that anybody has that kind of attitude to depression in these modern times. Get rid of that doctor and go see another one. A doctor has an absolute moral obligation to take you seriously. Depression isn't a bit of a low mood it is a recognised illness, with, I might add, recognised ways of successfully managing the symptoms. I'm not a doctor so I wouldn't get involved in diagnosing depression but I strongly feel that if you speak to a different medical professional you will get a sympathetic ear and a more accurate diagnosis. They have made great progress with mental health in the last twenty years, there are pills with very few side effects available and psychological techniques such as cognitive behavioural therapy that have proven to be very effective.
In terms of anything additional I can suggest to help you, you could try taking St John's Wort (buy in any health shop). This is supposed to be as effective as prescribed anti depressants and has the added benefit of being natural. Of course I recommend you discuss with a doctor first. Crystals may also help you. Turquoise is an excellent all round stone to relieve depression and selenite worn on the person can help calm and regulate your mood. You could also try keeping a piece of amethyst in the room to dispell any external negavity.

Karma originated in the Eastern religions and is essentially the belief in a moral cause and affect. It can either be seen as natural justice or it is sometimes interpreted as deity intervention but either way it forms the idea that if you put wrong into the world, you will have wrong done back to you.
Wicca picks up the idea of karma with its adherence to the threefold rule – whatever you do will be done back to you multiplied by three. I’m not a fan of neat little mathematical moralities and I don’t personally follow the threefold rule myself. However there is a real logic behind karma. The kind of person who puts nothing but misery and unhappiness into the world is unlikely to get much happiness back. Likewise, somebody who spends their life being kind to and helping others will probably get a lot of kindness directed back at them. So whether you believe in an interventionist deity, a universe with moral laws or simply in the logic behind human behaviour – whichever way you look at it, some form of karma makes sense.

Question. My friend has recently told me that she is practising the Wiccan religion. But the more she tells me about it, the more I want to do it too. The thing is that I don't want her to think I'm just copying. Is there something similar I can do that is my own thing and not Wicca?
Answer. Your friend doesn't have a monopoly on the Wiccan religion. And to be honest its a pretty poor sort of Wiccan or friend who wants to stop somebody from following what feels right to them spiritually just so they can look individual following the path by themselves. If you have looked into Wicca and it feels like something you want to explore further then go for it. Wicca wouldn't have the huge following it has today if nobody had ever learned about it from those around them.
The whole esoteric, keeping knowledge to oneself thing is a negative part of spirituality. Religions should be open and accessible to all. Anyone who says that their way is secret and only for them and better than everybody else's way has a lot of growing up to do. If you do follow a path that works for you and somebody is interested in following it too, a genuine seeker will be open hearted and glad to share. If one of my friends expressed an interest in my beliefs and my path I would be proud to think I had helped them in some little way.
So my advice to you is to look further into Wicca and maybe have a look at Trad Witchcraft and some of the other pagan paths. Decide what is genuinely right for you, regardless of what your friend does and follow your own path to your own truths. Life is too short to deny yourself spiritual progression based on what your friend wants.

QUESTION - I am looking to make a flying ointment and have heard that the best way to do it is if I use baneful herbs. I’ve had a look on the internet and found out the names of some baneful herbs but I’m not sure where to buy them and how much to use. I don’t want to get it wrong because I’ve heard that using these types of herbs can be really dangerous. Where can I get them from and what should I use in my flying ointment?
ANSWER - Oh good Goddess! If I answered your question with half the information you are looking for, I could probably get arrested. I’d have to be completely certifiable to give you a recipe for flying ointment using baneful herbs. Do you actually know what a baneful herb is? It’s a herb that causes death. Yes – death. Not a bit of a high or a bit of a giggle on a Saturday night, death. Some of the baneful herbs can’t even be handled without gloves. Only a very skilled herbalist should even think of making this type of mixture. To be honest, were I to want one myself I would probably go to someone else to make it for me. And even then I’d be taking a risk – dosages vary between plants and between individuals. Herbs are not an exact science. Think of making a random baneful flying potion as a bit like swallowing 300 paracetamol and then jumping off a really tall building - just to make sure.
I’d be surprised if you found a reputable supplier for this type of herb already grown – I’m not sure of the legality surrounding some of the plants (some of which are actually wild and grow native to the UK) but normally the only way to acquire the really poisonous plants is in seed form. Which brings you on to a minefield of problems with growing them (presumably) hiding them and knowing how to treat them in order to make the flying ointment. My advice is to forget baneful herbs.
But before you do forget them – a word of warning, the effects of these herbs can be very potent and extraordinary. Some of these potions make the chemical drugs you can get off your local dealer seem like candyfloss. The effects of having your mind altered to this degree can cause permanent irreversible psychological harm. Yes people do use them safely but even experienced witches have died from taking the risk. And taking them for recreational use is idiotic in the extreme.
However the good news is that you can make flying ointments without resorting to the use of poisons. I’m not posting anything on my site that I haven’t personally tried (and certainly nothing that breaks the law) but when I’ve pulled together a few recipes (that will most definitely not contain baneful herbs) that I am happy with, I will put them up. In the meantime, please be careful taking random recipes off the internet. If it is something that really, really interests you, take up the study of herbs and be prepared to wait a few years until you have mastered the knowledge and skills to make your recipes properly and as far as can be, safely.

QUESTION - Hi, I am very new to this. But something strange happened when my grandma died. She gave me a green ring and asked me to wear it on my right ring finger. I did so after she died.
Funny things are happening to me, the other night i got very angry on my dad and his tv started malfunctioning on its own. A few of these visions I went online and checked, for psych visions and ended up on the Wiccan site. I think there's more to this. I started candle meditation.
Two of my spells have worked almost. The funny thing is, my dreams.
I have never had such vivid dreams. The description, topic, everything is new.
At night, after clearing my altar I hear sounds, which I've never heard before.
Last night those sounds were active till 2am in the morning.
I have become very conscious, when i stare at people and concentrate its like i can feel what they are not saying.
I have always been a very chitty chatty person. Now all i do is either in my circle, with a candle or looking for answers online.
Please help me out. I feel the power, i need to use it well.
Also, keep this discreet.
ANSWER - I've got three ways to answer this question and it depends on whether or not the experiences are linked to your Grandmother's ring and whether we take your experiences as being linked to the supernatural. So firstly, we will assume that the experiences have little link between them and all have rational explanations. So, you are grieving for your Grandma, your temper is a little short, you shout at your father - perfectly explainable. You withdraw from other people and spend more time by yourself. Again, easily explained. Your emotions are running high which causes your dreams to become more vivid. You are awake more at night and more aware of the house settling noises as a result. Your malfunctioning tv - coincidence.
Having said that, given that you have had so many experiences that differ to the norm for you in a short space of time, it would seem likely that they are linked in some way. I do not feel we can write them off as merely grief and /or coincidence.
Secondly we look at whether your Grandmother and her ring have any significance. Possibly. We cannot overlook the fact that your Grandmother is choosing to be present in your home. However, I think this is unlikely. You make no mention of any of the typical signs present when a home is inhabited by a spirit. Nor does it seem likely at all that your Grandma is possessing you as a person. Such an explanation just doesn't fit the facts. So we can reject a direct link to the spirit world as an explanation.
So this is what I think is going on. You are at a stage in your life when your other senses are starting to develop. The death of your Grandmother has accelerated this by focusing your mind onto bigger questions like death and mortality. This leaves you more open to experiences that perhaps you have not noticed before. As you sense external powers that take you out of your comfort zone you start to feel a bit uneasy which leads you to spend a great deal of your time trying to work out what is going on. So your experiences were not created by either the death of your Grandmother or by her ring but by your own growing and heightened perception as a result of her death. Don't fix on the ring, as an item itself it isn't the significant factor here, except perhaps as a symbol of the love your Grandmother had for you. I think you are moving into a period in your life when your strengths and your powers are starting to develop and quite naturally you are starting to seek answers and guidance as to how to use them. The key thing to remember is that you would have started eventually to awaken these parts of yourself whether your Grandmother had died or not. She may well have been the catalyst but it is highly unlikely she was the cause.
With this in mind, where do you go from here? Well the thing that jarred with me in your question is the fact that you seem to be spending all your time in solitary circle work or on the internet. I would strongly urge you to strike a balance between what you are doing and socialising with others. Don't force your journey by focusing all your energies and intent on it. Let it flow naturally. Let it become a part of your life instead of taking over all of your life. If you genuinely are destined to follow a path as a magical practitioner/witch/whatever you will succeed better by creating a balance between your magical workings and yourself as a person.
Let the power flow through you, start with some basic spells to direct your energy and see what you can achieve with it. Knowledge is great but don't see the internet as a substitute for practical experimentation and your own development. Set some time aside to work on channelling your energies. Get a book on meditation and learn how to centre and ground so you are in a healthy state of mind when attempting this work. And like I say, don't neglect the other parts of your life. The you of the power and the energy is just a part of who you are. Please don't neglect the other bits.

A witch bottle is traditionally used for protection. The idea is that the bottle is a representation of the witch that evil spirits or magical attackers will focus on instead of the witch herself. So a witch bottle will have personal effects of the witch inside it, for example toe nails, urine, menstrual blood or hair clippings. It will also likely have protective oils and herbs inside it, I like to use sage or basil and I always use rose oil to represent me as a person. Some witches will add other ingredients like graveyard dirt or crystals. Anything of significance to the witch will give the bottle additional potency. Some witch bottles are made as purely defensive magic, some work more like a counter curse and
I know at least one witch who puts a powerful hex on her bottles as an attack against anyone who threatens magic against her.
I use mine for a slightly different purpose. As the bottle represents me, I use it a bit like a poppet. So if I am tired and have to go to work, I place my bottle in comfy blankets to make me feel rested. Or if I am hot I will dunk it in a bowl of cold water to cool down. Its an unconventional use but a very useful one.
Picture is of my own current witch bottle. I will be doing a blog on my serenity bottle shortly.
QUESTION - I really really love a man and I need you to help him fall in love with me. I know I'm only 15 but please don't say my feelings can't be real because I know that they are. If you could just make him feel for me what I feel for him then I know we could be happy together.
ANSWER - I'm going to explain to you why I can't. But I don't want you to think that I'm not sympathetic to your situation. The pain you are going through is very real and nobody has the right to trivialise it. And your age is irrelevant, you can be as much in love at 15 as you can at any age. In fact as the emotions tend to dull a bit as you get older, your feelings are probably more intense than those of someone in their thirties or forties. So believe me when I say that I do not doubt at all you have a genuine love for this man.
Love is a very powerful emotion and the power lies not just in the intensity of the feelings it generates but in the other emotions it brings with it. Reciprocated love brings security and even to a sense self validation. But a love borne only from manipulative magic would be a false love. If I did make this man feel a love for you it could only ever be an illusion. And you could never feel secure in his love. Equally it would weaken your self worth as a person, you would always know that your relationship was based on a lie and not on his genuine appreciation of you as a person. That would have a negative effect on any relationship between you but also you would start to question your worth as a person. You would become bitter that his feelings couldn't be real. Or you would become insecure knowing that if the magic faded his feelings would fade along with it. I know how tempting it is and I'd be lying if I said I haven't been tempted with this kind of thing myself once or twice. But manipulating somebody on this level would be to take away their free will and their right to be themselves. And it would devalue personal integrity both as a witch and as a person. Integrity might not seem that important to you when you are faced with this passionate intensity but in time the importance of it will grow. And you would come to blame yourself for what you had done to this man. And as the guilt eroded your integrity any happiness you had found would be undermined and gradually ebb away.
So I don't speak lightly when I ask you to forget love spells and move on. I'm not going to tell you that you will find somebody else, you may well do, but even if you don't and you never stop hoping that he will grow to love you it still isn't worth the damage involved to all concerned by taking his free will away. Even if you spend years with that secret little hope that one day he will realise he has always loved you, it has to be his choice and his decision.
